I drink coffee almost every day. It can be an expensive habit. If you own a Keurig, a single-cup coffee maker, then you know how pricey it can be for just one cup of coffee.

I was at a Starbucks yesterday, and a 12-pack of Pikes Place K-cups was $11.95. That comes out to about $1 per cup of coffee.

You can buy other brands of K-cups that are cheaper. However, one cup of coffee generally comes to .50 cents or more. But can you save more with a refillable K Cup?

Does The Reusable K-Cup Save Money?

In order to save money with my Keurig, I use the Ekobrew reusable K-Cup. This saves me hundreds of dollars per year. All I have to do is buy coffee that is ground and fill the K-cup myself.

Yesterday I decided to get a 1/4lb of Starbucks Pikes Place ground coffee. They ground the coffee right in front of me. The bag of coffee only cost $2.98. They’ll grind it for free.

Then I went home and started measuring.  I figured out that it only takes 1/8 of a cup of ground coffee to fill the reusable K-cup. I was able to get 15 scoops of coffee from the bag. That means that I could have 15 cups of (10 oz) coffee for a total of $2.98!

You have to admit, that’s much cheaper than buying the pre-made singles. And honestly, it didn’t take long at all to fill it myself. It literally took a second. So it’s not like you’re wasting time by using the reusable K-cup.

It’s really easy to use the Ekobrew.

Bonus: You’re doing something good for the environment too.

Also, you won’t need to remove the filter holder with the Ekobrew. It’s made in a way that eliminates that need.

Let’s Compare Some of Our Single Cup of Coffee Options

Clearly, Ekobrew is the most frugal choice. If you’re like me, you’ll find it tough to spend $1 or more for a cup of coffee now that you know you can do it cheaper. And the savings can really add up over time.

The Long-Term Savings

So you’re saving 80 cents per cup with the Ekobrew. You might think that 80 cents isn’t a lot of cash.

But it is amazing how much pennies add up over time. Here’s an example. Let’s say I bought a tall coffee from Starbucks every day of the week. It would end up costing me just over $600 per year.

Conversely, let’s say I have one cup of coffee using the Ekobrew Refillable cup. It would only cost me $72 for a year’s worth of coffee! That’s a savings of over $525! If you add the cost of the Ekobrew in, you’re still saving over $500.

It’s currently selling on Amazon for $6.95.

That might not seem like a lot of money savings. However, if you use a Challenge Everything Budget, you can save on more expenses. The coffee savings combined with other savings will add up big time.

And just think about what you could do with an extra $500+ a year. Here are some ideas. You could:

  • Make a principal payment on your mortgage
  • Go on a three-day vacation
  • Pay down your consumer debt

Why not do something different with your coffee and save some cash? Especially when there’s a cheaper option that’ll still get you great coffee.

I understand that not everyone buys coffee at Starbucks every day. However, some people do. And even if you don’t, you’re still saving money with the Ekobrew.

This example helps to show how great the savings is to have a reusable K-cup for the Keurig versus buying a cup from a store.

If you want to start saving big with the refillable Ekobrew, here are some tips. These tips will help you make great coffee.

What to Keep in Mind When Grinding the Coffee

When you go to have the coffee ground, remember to specify the type of grind. The grind makes a difference in the taste of the coffee. There are essentially two ways to grind:

A Fine Grind – The finer you grind the coffee, the slower the water will pass through the refillable cup. This is great if you like your coffee to have a bold taste. However, you do not want a grind that is too fine.  This could cause trouble with your Keurig. Too fine a grind could cause the Keurig to back up. If this happens, you may get some overflow.

A Coarse Grind – With a coarser grind, water will pass through the refillable cup faster. Because of this, the coffee will not be as strong. Do you like a milder cup of coffee? If so, a coarser grind would be your best option.

Summary

So if you’re a big coffee drinker, you may want to try the Ekobrew. Why not save some money on your coffee habit? And why not give the environment a boost in the process?
