The world of freelancing can be a lucrative side hustle or even a full-fledged career for those with an entrepreneurial spirit. The number of fields in which a person can create a freelancing career is endless, and so can be the competition that a freelancers faces as he/she works to gain clients. Here are 6 “fields of excellence” that can help a freelancer in any area be a top performer in their field, build up a great reputation and establish a lucrative freelancing business for years to come.

Commit to Continuing Education

A successful freelancer or entrepreneur in any field is never done learning. No matter what your freelancing specialty, there’s always advancing technology, new products and better ways to service your client. In order to be at the top of the heap in your particular freelancing field, it’s vital to commit to continuing education, not just in your freelancing market, but in related markets as well. For example, if you are a freelance writer, one way to continue your education is with an online course, like Earn More Writing.

Meet or Beat Your Deadlines

The availability of freelancers in nearly any field abounds, but what’s not so easy to come by these days is a consultant who keeps his or her word. When a client knows that they can count on you to meet their deadlines for a given project, and knows that they aren’t going to have to chase you down to ask when a project will be completed, you can be sure that client will remember your name when another project comes along.

Deliver Better-Than-Expected Results

Along with keeping your word and meeting or beating deadlines, delivering better-than-expected products or results will also help clients remember you when another business consulting need comes along. Businesses are always looking for quality contractors and freelancers that they know will be as committed to providing quality service as they are. One of your jobs as a freelancer is to make your client look extra good by providing the highest quality work you can provide. Do so, and the clients will keep coming back.

Practice Good Networking/Relationship Building

Freelancing is as much about relationships as it is about the quality of work. Businesses want freelancing consultants that have just as much to provide in the area of relationship as they do in the area of quality work. Friendliness, the ability to get along well with others and great networking/team-building skills will make clients and potential clients remember your name and/or your face.

Charge What You’re Worth

It’s important not to over-charge or under-charge clients for work you’ve completed. A discounted fee for the first job or two is okay, as long as you’ve made it clear to your client that you normally charge more; however, consistently charging less for work than what you deserve to be paid will eventually create bad feelings on your end as you work for less than you are worth. On the other end of the spectrum, charging more than you’re worth will create bad feelings on the client’s end. Just because a competitor charges more for a service doesn’t mean you should.  There may be added services or experience that warrants a higher rate from a fellow freelancer.  Charge what you’re worth, and you’ll keep both clients happy and yourself happy.

Provide Value-added Services

It doesn’t ever hurt to throw in a few freebies for clients now and again. A task here or there without charge will make your clients feel appreciated and valued. Work to find ways that you can give your clients value-added services without taking up too much of your own time or money. Giving your business that extra edge will ensure clients will use your services again.

A successful freelancing career requires much more than the ability to do the job required. It requires a professional hand that will put you a cut above the rest and make your business stand out among the crowd. To get that “stand out from the crowd” result, follow the six tips for successful freelancing above and make your business the best that it can be.
