It’s pink, it’s an app, it’s the most convenient way to get around sometimes, and has helped millions to get to their destination safely — and it’s cheaper than a traditional cab. What are we talking about here? Rideshare app, Lyft!
You’ve most likely been a rider, but have you ever considered being a driver? With the holidays quickly approaching, this could be an option for you to make side income, in addition to working retail as a cashier or stock person, or asking for some overtime hours at work.
Consider this: people travel more during the holiday season which means your potential for earning much-needed cash could be pretty high as a Lyft driver.
If you’re thinking now would be a good time to start earning some extra money so that you won’t be socked with a massive credit card bill in January, working as a Lyft driver might just be the answer to your income problem.
Why You Should Consider Driving for Lyft
There are a number of reasons why Lyft might be the best choice for you if you are interested in making more money to cover holiday and extra expenses.
There are other options out there for people interested in becoming a rideshare driver, but Lyft has benefits that other companies might not offer.
First, Lyft often runs sign-up bonus programs in some cities that have the potential to pay new drivers extra cash bonuses of up to $500 or more for becoming a driver with Lyft.
You can find out about current sign-up bonuses by checking directly with Lyft.
According to their website, some Lyft drivers can make up to $800 just by driving on weekends alone.
Lyft works hard to create a supportive environment and a positive culture for their drivers and other employees.
How to Become a Lyft Driver
As a driver for Lyft, you get to take people to their destinations and make money in the process. Applying to be a driver with Lyft is easy. Just go to their website and follow the directions for being a Lyft driver.
The length of time it takes for a person to be approved as a Lyft driver varies because Lyft does background checks on all potential drivers.
Depending on how quickly the process is for a background check in your state, you could be approved in as little as one week or it could take longer.
There are also vehicle and other requirements for becoming a Lyft driver.
If you want to be a Lyft driver you must be at least 21 years of age and must own an iPhone or Android phone in order to have access to the app that helps you schedule riders.
Lyft-approved vehicles must seat at least five people, have seatbelts for each person and have four doors (jump doors are not included; each door must have its own handle).
Also, you have to have a valid in-state driver’s license that is at least a year old and your vehicle must carry proper insurance.
There are age requirements for Lyft rider vehicles as well. The age requirement of a vehicle depends on the city you live in and those requirements can be found on the Lyft website.
Can I Drive For Lyft if I Don’t Have My Own Car?
Even if you don’t own your own car you may be able to drive with Lyft by using their Express Drive Rental Program. Check out the Lyft website for more information on that program.
Why is Being a Lyft Driver a Great Way to Make Extra Cash?
One of the nice things about driving for Lyft is that you get to determine your driving schedule based on the hours that are convenient for you.
As a driver for Lyft you simply use the Lyft driver app to sign in when you’re available to work, and sign out when you’re not available. In other words, you choose the hours you want to work.
The app tells drivers which rides are available in their area. If a driver wants the job, they accept the ride and go pick up the passenger.
Also, driving for Lyft is easy, as you never have to deal with collecting payments or giving change.
Lyft collects the money from the rider and then pays drivers on a weekly basis. Bonus: many Lyft drivers get tips from clients as well, meaning even more cash in your pocket for holiday or other spending.
How Much Can I Make Driving for Lyft?
Lyft has a button on its website that allows potential drivers to calculate how much they might make per week as a Lyft driver in their city.
When I entered “one hour” and my major metropolitan city, the feature told me that I could make up to $28 an hour as a Lyft driver.
Rates of pay will vary from city to city of course, but the potential there is for some serious extra income.
Drivers who work on Friday nights, weekends and holidays have the potential to make more, as will drivers who live in larger cities where there is more available riders.
