It’s always a good thing to have a variety of options for making money. Everyone has bills to pay and expenses to cover. Having a traditional job to cover those expenses is smart, but it’s also a great idea to have access to some other avenues for earning cash.

One of peoples’ largest expenses is usually the rent or mortgage payment. Depending on where you live, paying the rent or mortgage can cost between $500 and $2000.

Luckily, there are money making options outside of a traditional job that can help you pay the rent or other bills and expenses.

Making money online has become a hot topic item in recent years, and the technology industry has gotten on board with its creation of money making apps.

Money making apps are a great way to earn extra cash for paying bills because they can be downloaded on to your smart phone, tablet or other portable device.

This means you can rake in extra cash when you’re on the bus going to work, waiting in the doctor’s office for your appointment, have spare time in between your college classes, or are just bored with nothing else to do.

Different money making apps have different earning opportunities. Some allow you to make money from the comfort of your own home while others send you out on the road.

Here is a list of sixteen money making apps you can download onto your electronic device so that you’ve got easily accessible options for making money in your spare time that will help you pay the rent and cover other expenses as well.

Pay the Rent with These Money Making Apps

Luckily, there are money making apps available for a host of different activities and jobs. This is good news for you: if there’s one money making avenue that doesn’t appeal to you, you can just move onto the next one.

How many of these apps would appeal to your money making nature?

1. Ibotta

Ibotta is an app that will help you save money on groceries by giving you cash rebates for the items you purchase. Here’s how it works.

First, you need to sign up with Ibotta here and download the app onto your smart phone.

One of the questions Ibotta will ask you is which local stores you do your grocery shopping at. Ibotta is partnered with dozens of big and smaller name grocery stores all over the United States.

Before you go grocery shopping, you pick the rebates available for items you want to buy at your favorite grocery store. After you grocery shop and buy the items that qualify for the rebates, you take a picture of your receipt and send it to Ibotta.

Ibotta deposits the cash you have earned into your Ibotta account within 48 hours, and you can then transfer the cash to your own bank account.

Ibotta makes it easy to save money on groceries without having to search for or clip coupons, and the app helps you save money by putting your rebate savings into a separate account that you can use to pay for whatever you want.

2. Swagbucks

Swagbucks will pay you cash for doing a variety of things you might be doing already. Swagbucks pays you points for watching videos online, playing online games, shopping online, searching the web and taking surveys.

When you are ready to cash out your points, you can use them to get gift cards from a number of prominent stores such as Amazon, Walmart, Target and more.

You can also redeem your points for cash that will be deposited into your PayPal account – cash which can be used to pay your rent.

If the rent payment and other necessities are taken care of, you can use your Swagbucks money to go on vacation or buy that new item you’ve been saving for.

And the tasks Swagbucks will pay you for doing are so easy that you probably won’t even realize you are “working” and earning money as you complete them.

3. Inbox Dollars

Inbox Dollars partners with trusted brands to get members’ opinions on their products. To date, Inbox Dollars has paid their members a total of over 50 million dollars, so they must be doing something right.

People who sign up for Inbox Dollars (they have a great app available) are called upon to share their opinion in surveys.

The company also pays members for watching videos, shopping online and more. As you earn points with Inbox Dollars, you can request payment in a number of ways.

You can be paid via a gift card to your favorite store (stores such as Amazon, Best Buy or Barnes and Noble), you can be paid via a pre-paid Visa reward card or you can request to be paid via check and get cash for your Inbox Dollars tasks.

4. I-Say

I-Say is an online survey rewards community run by Ipsos. You can earn I-Say points by taking surveys. You can also potentially win prizes by entering contests on the site.

After you’ve earned a certain number of points by completing your surveys, you can redeem those points by trading them in for gifts cards to your favorite stores such as Amazon or Starbucks, or by converting them to a PayPal deposit.

5. Lyft

Lyft is a rideshare service that takes people where they want to go. When you sign up to be a Lyft driver and download the Lyft app, you can start earning money with Lyft as you please.

With Lyft, you can drive people around when you want to, signing in and out of the Lyft app when you are available.

When you sign in as available, Lyft starts sending you notifications of available rides needed. When you accept the task, you go and pick the rider up, bringing them to their destination – and home later if needed.

Lyft then pays you a portion of the money they collect from the rider. They pay drivers weekly for the rides they’ve given.

As a bonus, many Lyft riders pay their drivers tips when they feel the service has been good. If you like the idea of driving people around in your spare time, this might be a good way for you to make some extra cash.

Here are some ways you can maximize your earnings with the Lyft app.

  • Drive a fuel-efficient car: the less money you spend on gas, the more money that stays in your pocket
  • Keep your car clean and in good shape: riders feel more comfortable when they are riding in a nicer, clean car
  • Provide little extras: some of the more successful Lyft drivers provide mints, small bottles of water or other extras to make a rider feel appreciated
  • Take cues from your customer: engage in polite, light-hearted conversation with your riders but stay quiet if you sense your rider isn’t interested in talking
  • Be willing to be available at peak rider times such as on Friday and Saturday nights and early morning hours

Check out this article for more information on how you can maximize your earnings with Lyft. If you like the idea of meeting new people and driving people to their destinations this could be a great way for you to earn more cash.

6. Trim

Trim is an almost effortless way for you to put more cash in your pocket. Here’s how it works. You know how you’ll be looking over your bank or credit card statement and see a charge you didn’t expect to be there?

Maybe it’s a charge for an annual membership to a book subscription service or a credit monitoring service.

Well, Trim seeks out those hidden charges and helps you make sure you are only paying for things you want to pay for.

Trim’s money saving service works like this. The first step is to sign up with Trim and give them secured (256-bit SSL encryption) access to your credit and debit cards.

After you do that, they monitor your accounts for hidden monthly, semi-annual or annual charges that you may no longer want, need or be aware of.

The technology they use at Trim understands whether a charge is a normal reoccurring charge (such as that weekly trip to get your favorite latte’) or a potential charge you are unaware of, such as an annual charge for a magazine subscription.

When they find those charges, Trim sends you a quick text or email asking if you want the charges or automatic withdrawals to be allowed to continue.

If you agree that you want the charge to continue, Trim leaves it alone. However, if you want to cancel the charge and no longer pay for the service or product, Trim makes the call and does that for you.

As an added bonus, Trim will look at necessary annual charges such as your auto or homeowner’s insurance charges, and do some shopping around to see if they can find you a better rate.

They’re great at negotiating bills and working to save you money in a number of ways. And, they’ll make all the calls when it comes to canceling and switching services so that you can spend your time doing more important things, like having fun.

Trim works to put more money in your pocket every month and help you make sure you’re not spending money on things you don’t want to pay for.

7. Ebates

Want to get paid cash for shopping? Then Ebates is your answer. Since 2008 Ebates has been giving members cold, hard cash when they shop for things they want and need through the Ebates portal.

From the Ebates website:

“Stores pay us a commission for sending our members to their websites, and we share it with you. It’s that simple!”

It really is that simple. And bonus: it’s totally free to join. Here’s how it works. First, you go to the Ebates website and sign up to become a member.

The next time you go shopping, you do so by first logging in to Ebates. Then you click on the store you want to shop at and Ebates directs you to their website.

You do your shopping, add items to your cart and check out and pay as you normally would. Then, Ebates sends you a cash rebate according to the amount paid for shopping at that store.

Each store has a different rebate amount when you connect with them through Ebates. Here are some examples of what the rebate amount is for some different stores at this writing (note that rebate percentages are subject to change):

  • Amazon: 3.0% in select departments
  • EBay: 2.0% in select departments
  • Macy’s: 3.0%
  • Kohl’s: 3.0%
  • Walmart: 1.0%

Since you likely go shopping anyway, you may as well earn some cash back while you’re doing it. And if you’re interested in earning even more money with Ebates, check out their referral program.

Ebates will pay you even more cash when you refer friends and family members who become Ebates members and make a qualifying purchase of $25 or more.

8. Task Rabbit

If you’re good at helping people, you can earn money to pay your rent by becoming a tasker on TaskRabbit.

TaskRabbit works like this: people needing tasks done put their requests on TaskRabbit. TaskRabbit then notifies local taskers of the available jobs in their area with their easy-to-install app.

You select the job you want to do and notify the client to negotiate the details with them, such as when you can complete the task and how many hours you think it will take to complete it.

After you complete the task, you submit your invoice to TaskRabbit and they collect the money from the client and pay you.

People use TaskRabbit for a number of different types of tasks. As a tasker for TaskRabbit, you might have an opportunity to:

  • Help assemble furniture
  • Do a minor home repair job
  • Help someone move
  • Clean a room, house, basement, garage or other area
  • Deliver something for someone
  • Function in a personal assistant type of task

Or a number of other potential available tasks. TaskRabbit helps keep taskers and clients safe by performing background and identity checks, and also carries insurance to keep TaskRabbit members safe.

If you like the idea of being able to earn money by completing different types of tasks for people during the hours you choose to be available, this could be a great way for you to earn extra side hustle income.

9. Mobile Expression

According to its website, Mobile Expression is “a market research panel designed to understand the trends and behaviors of people using the mobile Internet.”

This helps the company teach other companies how they can better market to mobile device users. What does this information have to do with you?

As a member of Mobile Expression, you get paid prizes and rewards – including cash – for allowing the Mobile Expression app to be installed on your mobile device.

So basically, all you have to do to earn money and valuable prizes with Mobile Expression is to do what you normally do with your mobile device: search the Internet, shop, play games, whatever “normal” is for you.

If you want to earn money for doing what you do anyway, click here to sign up with Mobile Expression for iPhone or click here to sign up with Mobile Expression for Android.

10. Cash Crate

Cash Crate is similar to other market research companies in that they pay you cash to do various things on your phone, computer or mobile device.

Cash Crate pays members for activities such as:

  • Signing up for products and services
  • Playing games
  • Taking surveys
  • Shopping online
  • Socializing online
  • Winning contests

Many of the activities you do to get cash from Cash Crate are things you are likely doing already. They also pay you cash when you refer friends to join as well.

The company has been in business since 2006 and pays out thousands of dollars each month to its members.

A fun little page on the Cash Crate website is their Payment Wall, where members post pictures of the payments they’ve received from Cash Crate.

The Payment Wall is a great way for people potentially interested in earning cash by becoming a member to see legitimate payments made to current members.

Also, it’s free to become a member of Cash Crate and people as young as 13 years of age can join Cash Crate.

11. WeGoLook

WeGoLook is a gig-centered task service that primarily hires taskers to take pictures of items for potential buyers and other interested parties. Many times, the item you’ll be sent to take pictures of is a car.

Here’s how the task process for the company works.

When you sign up to be a “looker” with WeGoLook and install the app on your phone, you get a list of available jobs in your area, along with the pay for that task and the date the pictures or other task items are due.

After accepting a job, you go to the specified location, take pictures of the requested item and send them in to WeGoLook.

Most of the time you are specifically looking for defects and blemishes, or to capture the overall condition of the car or other item.

WeGoLook pays lookers on a weekly basis for tasks they’ve completed. Along with taking pictures for clients, WeGoLook also offers custom task services too, so you might have an opportunity to do other types of tasks for people in your area.

12. GigWalk

GigWalk can be a fun and interesting way for you to earn some cash. Companies use GigWalk to help conduct research on products and services.

GigWalk hires Gigwalkers to complete that research. Similar to other task-based apps, people who sign up with GigWalk will be shown a list of available gigs in their area which they can accept or reject.

The gigs also list what a member will be paid if they choose to complete the job.

Some common tasks for Gigwalkers might include taking a picture of a product on a shelf, of a menu at a restaurant or of a marketing event at a retail store or restaurant.

The information that Gigwalkers send to GigWalk is shared with the coordinating company, and it helps the company discover potential roadblocks to sales and better market their products and services to the public.

GigWalk sends weekly payments for the gigs you complete with them. Performance matters with GigWalk too.

As you gain experience with GigWalk, you’ll raise your performance score and be eligible to choose higher paying gigs. In other words, the better you perform at the smaller gigs you do, the more opportunity you’ll have to do larger gigs.

13. DoorDash

Delivering food from restaurants to customers is becoming more popular as people look for convenient ways to eat their favorite meals without leaving the house.

That’s where DoorDash comes in. The restaurant delivery app will allow you to sign in and out as you are available to work, and it also allows you to choose the jobs you want to take, showing in advance the pay you will earn if you accept the delivery job.

After you’ve completed the job you notify DoorDash and they’ll pay you for the week’s jobs on a weekly basis. Plus, you get to keep 100% of the tips you receive.

One different and fun thing about DoorDash is that you don’t necessarily need to own a car to deliver restaurant meals.

Depending on the laws in your city, you may be able to deliver for DoorDash with a bike or scooter instead of with your car. In some locations, you may even be able to walk and deliver for DoorDash.

If you are familiar with the restaurants in your area and like the idea of delivering to clients, this could be a great way for you to earn extra cash.

14. Field Agent

Field Agent is similar to GigWalk in that they work to help companies make sure they’re offering the best products and services with the highest quality marketing techniques to consumers.

When you download the Field Agent app, you’ll be asked to do a variety of jobs such as price checks, in-store display checks, and consumer surveys.

For instance, you may be asked to go to a specific store, find a specific product, take a photo of it and then answer questions about the product such as the price and the location of the product at the store.

Field Agent then pays you for the jobs you complete via your Dwolla account or Direct Deposit into your bank account.

This could be a great way to earn cash if you live near a lot of retail stores.

15. Declutter

Got a lot of old electronics and other items sitting around? Why not make money with it by downloading the Decluttr app?

Decluttr will buy a variety of electronic and other items from consumers such as DVDs, CDs, cell phones, books, Legos, game consoles, video games and more.

When you enter your products’ barcodes using your Decluttr app, the company makes you an offer for each item.

Once you accept the offer for your stuff, you pack it into a box and ship it to Decluttr (don’t worry about expensive shipping costs – they send you a free shipping label).

Once they receive your stuff they send you money. This can be a much faster and easier way to unload your electronics or other stuff and get money for them than it would be to deal with individual buyers at a garage sale or online with Craigslist or EBay.

16. Dosh

The Dosh app rewards you with cash back when you use the app for purchases you make when shopping online or booking hotels.

Just sign in to your Dosh app before you shop, and use it to connect to your favorite stores or hotel booking sites.

Because you give Dosh your credit card information (don’t worry: they use high-level security to protect you), they can find ways to give you cash back when you eat out too by searching out rebate options for your favorite restaurants.

Dosh partners with stores, restaurants and other retailers, helping to send customers their way by offering cash back rebates for purchases.

After you accumulate at least fifteen dollars in rebate monies, you can transfer your cash from your Dosh account to your PayPal account or via direct deposit to your savings or checking account.

So, there you have it: sixteen different ways you can work to make money to help you pay the rent or get money for whatever other financial goals and needs you have.

Making money is easy when you know where to look. Have you used any of the apps mentioned here to earn cash? If so, what was your experience?
