Tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
I’m Jesse Clark, a veteran high school and college teacher and Founder/CEO of uShine Technologies that has been in the technology industry for over a decade. I’ve found a passion in helping organizations and small businesses enhance their online presence and I hire only the best professionals around to offer the best products and services for my clients.
Why did you want to own your own business?
I wanted to set my own schedule. In my opinion, there is nothing more valuable than leaving the house or office in the middle of the day and running to the grocery store or taking a three-hour lunch. This type of flexibility is truly one of the main reasons I wanted to get into business for myself.
When did you start the business?
I started uShine in 2013 while working for other companies as a contractor. I finally went full time with the business August of 2014.
What training/experience did you have in your business field before you started?
I was a high school media productions teacher and I also taught web design at the college level. I was thrown right into the technology world and was forced to learn new platforms and systems. I instantly found a passion with web design.
What challenges did you face when starting up your business?
Reaching new clients has been and continues to be the greatest challenge in starting a new business. It is a slow process. However, getting involved in local networking groups, online communities, and developing an online presence is beginning to pay off. It is important to stay in front of your competition and the only way to do this is by getting your name out there.
How long did you have to run the business before you saw a profit?
My mission is to keep my overhead down by using FREE and affordable online resources, which allowed me to see profits immediately. In fact, I have a free e-book on my website that shares all of the free and inexpensive resources I use to run my business frugally. However, in order to see the profits I dream of, I’ve got a long and challenging journey ahead of me.
How did the business start-up affect your marriage/family?
There has been many discussions on how to balance work and family. We have had to come up with schedules to make everyone happy. Entrepreneurs need to be careful not to be consumed by their business.
What’s the best thing entrepreneurship has done for you?
I would say that one of the most valuable benefits of entrepreneurship, at least for me, is that I am developing skills in all areas of business and learning what my strengths and weaknesses are. I have to be my own book keeper, project manager, sales person, and designer.
What lessons have you learned about entrepreneurship along the way?
You cannot run a business without help. You need to reach out to others for advice and help when needed. Do not be afraid to get help and outsource when you can hire someone who can do a job better than you can, leaving you to focus on the aspects of your business that you do best.
What advice do you have for those considering entrepreneurship?
Don’t be afraid to keep a part time job or even full time job at first while your starting your business. Don’t take out a loan if all possible. Also, you will find out your strengths and weaknesses along the way and you need to reach out to other professionals and even team up with others that have the strengths that you might be lacking.
For example, I use Deacon at Well Kept Wallet for all of my SEO services and Laurie at The Frugal Farmer for my content writing services. Part of running a successful business is finding contractors/business partners that you work well with and that enhance your business services and quality of care. Don’t be afraid to bring others on board if it will help you business grow.
